Term 2 2019 Welcome Letter

It is with great excitement and anticipation that we commence Term 2 at Wollongong West Public School. This term sees many initiatives being implemented to support our children and their ongoing growth and development.

NAPLAN will be undertaken by our children in Years 3 and 5. This will provide valuable data for our school about our children’s learning. Please contact your child’s class teacher with any queries regarding your child’s participation in the assessments. These assessments will be held on 14-16 May.

Families will be invited to attend showcases of student learning this term. The showcase assembly for children in Years K-2 will be held on Monday 24 June at 2pm. The showcase assembly for children in Years 3-6 will be held on Tuesday 25 June at 2pm.

Written feedback to parents/carers about student learning will be provided to all families when our individual student reports are distributed at the end of this term.

Mrs Kandilas Feld will continue to support all teachers in integrating the use of technology into all classrooms across all key learning areas.

All children will participate in our whole school creative arts program led by our specialist art teacher, Mrs Morrissey. In Term Two, the broad area for learning will be in the domain of visual arts.

Our school will shine in extra-curricular activities in the creative arts with our Dance Troupe performing at the Illawarra Dance Festival at the IPAC and our choir performing at the Choral Festival at the Town Hall.

Aboriginal education will be a priority as our school celebrates and acknowledges Reconciliation Week through participation in events such as the community Walk for Reconciliation. A special assembly to acknowledge NAIDOC week will also be held.

Our school will celebrate the wonderful contributions of refugee families to our school and community by acknowledging Refugee Week later this term.

Our community hub initiatives will continue to thrive, including our English classes, swimming lessons and playgroup.

P & C community events, such as a Movie Night and Mother’s Day stall, will be held.

In staffing news, we warmly welcome a new teacher to our staff for Term Two. Mr Ben Taylor will be supporting our Stage 3 children with their literacy and numeracy learning as well as teaching mathematics across all stages.

I am very much looking forward to a fabulous term of great learning at Wollongong West Public School.

Kind Regards,

Michelle Barnes

Principal
