School athletics carnival 2019

Students will spend the day taking part in a variety of fun activities, as well as competing in athletic events for a position in the school team for the district carnival.

Children need to wear sport uniform or house colours: Narara (snake) is black, Booroo (kangaroo) is white and Dinewan (emu) is red. Please ensure your child wears joggers and has a hat. Children also need a water bottle, clearly labelled with their name. This will be carried with them to each activity. As children will be outside for a significant part of the day it is important they bring their hats and wear sunscreen.

A timetable of the activities is below for those families who would like to come along and enjoy the event.

The information below will answer some frequently asked questions:

  • Lunch and recess times have been modified to accommodate the program.
  • Age groups for district are junior (8,9,10), 11s and senior (12/13).
  • Team selections – children may 'win' their age group but not be selected for district because a child in a different age group beats their time or distance.
  • The children in Year 1 and 2 (who do not turn 8 this year) will 'have a go' at each event but cannot represent at the district carnival and their attempts will not be measured.
  • The best 2 results overall in all field events, 200m and 800m, and the best 3 place getters overall in the 100 and 200m races (8 years and up) will represent the school at the district carnival.
  • No finals – the competitors with the fastest times overall will qualify for district, which means a child may win their heat but not go to district.
  • In shot put and long jump children will have 3 attempts. The first attempt qualifies them to continue in the competition.
  • In high jump, children have one attempt at a qualifying height. If they are successful they continue in the competition. Children get 3 attempts at each successive height (after making the qualifying height).
  • The district carnival is next term, 15-16 August at Beaton Park Stadium.
