Centenary celebrations
On 12 November 2025, West Wollongong Public School proudly celebrated its centenary, marking 100 years of dedicated public education in the heart of our community. This milestone event was a joyful occasion that brought together current students, alumni, staff, families and friends for a memorable day of reflection, connection and celebration.
The centenary celebration was honoured by distinguished guests who have been part of or supporters of the school community over the years, including:
- Ms Alison Byrnes, Federal Member for Cunningham
- Councillor Tania Brown, Wollongong Lord Mayor
- Ms Meg Couvee, Relieving Executive Director, NSW Department of Education
- Mr David Lamb, Director of Educational Leadership and former teacher at the school
- Councillors David Brown, Andrew Anthony, and Kit Docker
- Former Principal Mr Geoff Ewert
- The Wonson family, former family
- Alumni Mrs Sandra Coleman and Mr David Guest
We were deeply honoured to welcome former and current staff and students who travelled from near and far to join in the celebrations. Their presence enriched the day with treasured memories and a shared commitment to the school’s enduring legacy.
Media were present throughout the day to capture the festivities and share this remarkable community celebration with a wider audience.
The centenary day included a rich array of activities reflecting the school’s vibrant spirit and heritage, such as:
- A special assembly featuring stories and memories shared by past and present members of the school community. The assembly also included a video message from the Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, Mr Murat Dizdar, adding an official and inspiring acknowledgement of the milestone.
- Classroom visits where guests could share their stories and experiences with students and explore the modern-day learning environments, showcasing how education at West Wollongong has evolved over time.
- Student performances showcasing music, dance and drama, reflecting the creativity and talents nurtured at West Wollongong.
- An exhibition of historic photographs, memorabilia and student projects exploring the school’s 100-year history.
- The ceremonial burial of a time capsule, designed to capture and preserve memories, stories, and mementos from this special centenary year for future generations to discover.
- A farmyard nursery with friendly animals for hands-on interaction, a visit from a local fire truck, plus bubble blowing stations and outdoor games promoting play and community spirit among children and families.
- Refreshments and opportunities for alumni, families and community members to connect and celebrate together.
Today, West Wollongong Public School proudly educates 245 students across 15 diverse and lively classrooms. The centenary celebrations reflected the school’s deep commitment to nurturing each student’s individuality and fostering a caring, inclusive community where everyone is valued.
This milestone was not only a celebration of the school’s rich past but an inspiring look ahead to the future. West Wollongong remains a place where friendships thrive, dreams are nurtured and stories continue to be written—by generations past, present, and those yet to come.
